The 3Cs: Comic-Con & Cosplay?

Since past groups have been able to go to comic-con together, I thought it'd be fun to post some themed questions. Some food for thought. Some "so are we all going as the whole LOTR fellowship or what?". You know, that. So . . .

Have you gone to Comic-Con before, and if so, when?

What fandom peaks your fancy?

Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?

What celebrity would you be most excited to see?

Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?

Feel free to add extra questions or anything you would like to share about yourself. :)

ALSO, I know that not everyone enjoys the idea or experience of Comic-Con, or may be nervous about going. If you're one of those people, don't feel like you have to participate if we do become able to go. There are so many amazing things to do in SD, Comic-Con is just one, and so if you think you rather go do one amazing thing instead of this specific amazing thing, then go for it!

I suppose it'd be right for me to go first:

Have you gone to Comic-Con before, and if so, when?

I've never been, though I have wanted to for a long time. Two years ago, my roommate and I walked around downtown, outside of the convention center and admired all the cool cosplays people had on, while grabbing some good food to eat. But I've never been in, so I'm excited to go.

What fandom peaks your fancy?

I love Stranger Things. LOTR. I enjoyed Sherlock while it lasted (but book Sherlock will always have my heart). Jurassic Park is my shiz--not the new movies. No.
Superpeople movies are a thing I enjoy, but only the movies, so it's a casual relationship. I love Disney because, well, childhood (can Disney be problematic? absolutely. Do I still wish I had all my old VCRs from when I was five? Maybe . . .). You know what's not problematic? Studio Ghibli. Also childhood, and adulthood.
I think that's it for now. Just me and my basic-ness.

P.S. I was wrong. Avatar the Last Airbender and Gravity Falls.

Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?

So my friends and I have a long-running joke that revolves around the internet phenomenas of "Gandalf Epic Sax Guy 10 Hours" and "Teen Dresses up as Sexy Gandalf". So I will likely be dressing up as sexy Gandalf (Gandalf with stockings and heels underneath the long cloak), blasting the sax from a speaker every so often.
OR I'll do something less weird. Mabel from Gravity Falls? Pointy-boob Lara Croft? Wonder Woman? Cthulu? The Raven from E.A.P.'s poem, but just the Raven? The world is my fabric store.

What celebrity would you be most excited to see?

I made this question, but I don't have a good answer for this question. I'm not too acquainted with the comic world, but I'd like to meet the cartoonist Aminder Dhaliwal and Larry F. Houston. And anyone from said interests above, of course.

Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?

I have just realized that very little is confirmed for this year's Comic-Con. So I guess no, not right now, but we'll see when they post more info on the website.

P.S.S. Maybe this is just me, but I find a good amount of fun in posing/answering seemingly random questions (i.e. if you could be part animal, but only one animal and it would have to be your top half only, what would it be?). If you too have thought about this, I encourage you to do so.

  1. Cool idea:

    1. Have you gone to Comic-Con before, and if so, when?

No. I've only been to WorldCon in Finland. My fan-nesses have been very private since I didn't grow up in a country and time where fandom was a thing.

    2. What fandom peaks your fancy?

Ru Paul's Drag Race, PokemonGo (lately) and, oddly enough, Slavoj Žižek fans - those people are just the right mix of funny and weird for me.

    3. Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?

I usually cosplay as Wednesday Addams cosplaying as a homicidal maniac.

    4. What celebrity would you be most excited to see?

Is Terry Crews going to be there?

    5. Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?

My favorite panels at Worldcon were where the panelists were gleefully discussing weird/dark things and a panel called "Writers and their cats", so anything with weird, happy people.

  2. Thanks Kat! This is fun.

I’ve been a couple times, though it’s been years. It’s super amazing, but also the site of the worst headache I’ve ever had in my life. I wasn’t thinking of going back, but if everyone’s going, then I’m in.

    2. What fandom peaks your fancy?

Studio Ghibli of course and the Last Airbender and HP. But mostly I’m into the more artsy graphic novels, all the people and stuff brought by the publishers Drawn and Quarterly and Fantagraphics. Anyone obsessed by the French artist David B the way I am?

    3. Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?

Not again, I don’t think. The first year I went, I was Baron Humbert Von Gikkingen from Miyazaki’s The Cat Returns, which attracted a flattering-but-weird amount of attention from the furry crowd.

    4. What celebrity would you be most excited to see?

Do authors count? China Mieville really stole the show when I saw him there. (I have committed to memory what he said about the pressure to write sequels: “When will fandom realize that just because Boba Fett is awesome doesn’t mean more Boba Fett will be more awesome?”)

But “real” celebrities? I wouldn’t say no to a selfie with Idris Elba.

    5. Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?

The coolest thing at the Con, in my limited experience, is called Quick Draw. It’s a competition among artists to see who can draw cartoons the fastest. The prompts are hilarious. But the best part is that Sergio Aragones (long-time Mad Magazine contributor) wins hands down, every year. It’s amazing to watch him work. Guy is a national treasure.

  3. Oh, this is cool - thanks for putting this up!

    1. Have you gone to Comic-Con before, and if so, when?
I have never been to any convention before, let alone Comic-Con. I'm very excited for the possibility of going this year!

    2. What fandom peaks your fancy?
Avatar: The Last Airbender, is probably the biggest one, but I'm also a large fan of Worm. Oh, Miyazaki and Harry Potter, too. No idea if that fandom is represented at the convention though. Other than that, I'm a big fan of graphic novels, comics, and authors in general - less of a specific fandom and more of an area.

    3. Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?
Maybe? If I could swing it, I might do something from A:tLA, possibly LoK. But I feel like if I cosplay I'm going to want to go all out, and that will likely require more money and time than I have this summer.

    4. What celebrity would you be most excited to see?
I've never been particularly wild about meeting famous people, but I reserve the right to retract that statement if some of my favorite authors will be there.

    5. Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?
Author panels, probably. Or creator panels in general. I'd have to look at the program before committing, but in general I'll probably be content to wander around with the group and just experience the event.

  4. Thank you so much for putting these questions together!

    1. Have you gone to Comic-Con before, and if so, when?

Here in Baltimore we've got BronyCon and we used to get Otakon (it recently moved to DC *sigh*), but as much as I love seeing all the participants hanging out in costume, I've never been to a convention of any kind before. Crowds tend to bring out all my worst shyness/introversion. If the whole group wants to go, though, I could muster the strength. My FOMO is constantly at war with my shyness, and Comic Con has always sounded like a ton of fun.

    2. What fandom peaks your fancy?

    Honestly, I adore Supernatural.

    3. Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?

I'm always super impressed and excited by other people's cosplay, but I won't/don't. Shy.

    4. What celebrity would you be most excited to see?

The idea of meeting celebrities freaks me out! Oof, this questionnaire is really making me sound like I spend most of my time hiding in a cave somewhere. Though, I suppose, that isn't too far off from how I stick to my office most days, lol.

    5. Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?

Not sure of what's being offered yet, but I'd be interested in most any author/creator panels.

    6. If you could be part animal, but only one animal and it would have to be your top half only, what would it be?

Provided that "top half" includes arms/tentacles, then I'd vote for Octopus. Definitely.

No, but as a lil weaboo it was my ultimate dream.

      What fandom peaks your fancy?
Fandoms kinda scare me but I'm super into Saga, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Bob's Burgers, Wicked&Divine a little, Twin Peaks, The Last of Us (if that even counts as a fandom?? but god I love that game)

Will you cosplay? If you could/can, what will it be as?
Probably won't have the time/money, but I've been wanting to be Marceline from Adventure Time for years.

What celebrity would you be most excited to see?
Zazie Beets! Gillian Anderson! Stephanie Beatriz! Tessa Thompson! Rebecca Sugar! ... aaand I'm realizing it's just the list of female celebrities I have huge crushes on

Is there a particular panel/area you are most excited to see?
When I was a preteen I had bright, gauzy dreams of being a game character artist. I gave that up but still love Artist's Alley.

    2. Oh! I didn't even think about including Bob's Burgers and Twin Peaks for some reason -- but yes to both of these!
